    MSW Year 2 Practicum

    What You’ll Gain: Learning Objectives

    By the end of the practicum, students will:

    • Develop competency in working with relational and sexual concerns in therapy
    • Gain confidence in managing multi-client sessions with differing needs and perspectives
    • Strengthen clinical observation skills and case conceptualization
    • Establish and maintain therapeutic rapport
    • Learn to apply multiple evidence-based therapeutic modalities
    • Understand the business aspects of private practice, including consultations and client retention
    Clinical Experience: Types of Cases You'll Work With

    During your practicum, you will gain experience working with:

    • Couples Therapy: High-conflict couples, sex and intimacy concerns, infidelity/betrayal trauma, interfaith/intercultural relationships, arranged marriages, and discernment counselling

     

    • Family Therapy: Co-parenting dynamics, estrangement, trauma support, and challenging family dynamics

     

    • Individual Therapy: relational difficulties, men’s mental health, and out-of-control sexual behaviors, divorce or separation, life transitions
    Training in Evidence-Based Therapies

    Practicum students will receive training in and apply evidence-based therapeutic approaches, including:

    What to Expect from Supervision

    Practicum students will receive:

    • Weekly individual supervision
    • Group supervision (only available when there are two + supervisees)
    • Case consultations focusing on couples, families, and individuals
    • Guidance on managing challenging therapy dynamics, including high-conflict situations, intimacy concerns, and betrayal trauma

    Additional Learning & Professional Development Opportunities

    Beyond clinical work, practicum students will have access to:

    • Monthly team meetings
    • Quarterly “Lunch and Learn” training events
    • Training on conducting consultations and marketing a private practice

    Please note: This practicum is primarily in-person. While there may be opportunities to work with clients virtually, students are expected to see clients in person at our office at Spadina & Richmond in Toronto. We are not accepting fully virtual practicum students at this time.

    New Moon Psychotherapy is a Toronto-based psychotherapy practice with a specialized focus on trauma, relationships, and sex therapy.

    A year 2 MSW practicum at New Moon Psychotherapy is an immersive experience in relationship and sex therapy, offering students the opportunity to work with adults facing challenges related to relational stressors, intimacy issues, psychological sexual dysfunctions, anxiety, and mood disorders.

    Practicum students will gain hands-on experience applying evidence-based modalities while receiving structured supervision and training in a supportive and growth-oriented environment.

    Meet the Supervisor: Camila Espana

    Supervision will be provided by Camila Espana, MSW, RSW,RMFT-Associate who practices from a person-centred, relational approach.

    Camila is committed to helping practicum students strengthen their clinical observations, relational knowledge, and individuality as clinicians.

    She emphasizes building confidence in managing complex therapeutic spaces where multiple clients, goals, and perspectives intersect.
