    How EMDR Intensives Work

    EMDR intensives follow the same eitght-phase protocol as traditional EMDR therapies. follows, just adapted for longer, focused sessions. Complimentary therapies like Internal Family Systems (IFS), Ego States Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), or Somatic Therapy— may be integrated to support deeper processing when needed.

    Phase 1, 2, & 3: Assessment, Preparation, and Planning

    These initial phases are essential because they determine whether EMDR is the right approach for your unique needs. Your therapist will:

    • Assess suitability for intensive EMDR therapy
    • Review your history, coping strategies, and goals
    • Teach grounding and self-soothing techniques
    • Customize the intensive to match your readiness, tolerance and therapeutic objectives

    This ensures that the intensive is safe, effective, and tailored specifically to you. After these phases, if your therapist determines that EMDR Intensive therapy is not a suitable approach, they will discuss alternative options with you.

    Phase 4-7: Processing

    Using bilateral stimulation (BLS) – eye movements, gentle taps, or sounds – you’ll process traumatic memories and strengthen positive beliefs.

    • Intensive sessions range from 2-8 hours per day, with breaks to prevent fatigue and consolidate progress.
    • Some clients try a 50-minute session before committing to an intensive to see if EMDR feels like the right fit.
    Phase 8: Follow Up

    A post-intensive session for integration and ongoing support, helping the healing continue beyond the intensive.

    1. What is the payment policy for an EMDR Intensive?

    For intensives that are 3 hours or longer, a deposit is required to secure your intensive, which will be applied toward your first session. Remaining balances are due two weeks before the date of the intensive session. This ensures your time is reserved, as longer intensives take up significant blocks in a therapist’s schedule.

    All other appointments are subject to the clinic’s general payment and cancellation policy.

    2. What if I try an intensive and it doesn’t feel like the right fit?

    It’s normal to feel uncertain before committing to an intensive. We encourage some clients to try a standard 50-minute EMDR session first to see if the approach is a good fit. If you begin an intensive and feel it’s not working, your therapist will pause or adjust the sessions to ensure your safety and comfort.

    3. What is the cost of EMDR Intensives?

    Pricing depends on the session length and format you choose. Sessions are prorated to the therapist’s hourly rate which range from $160-$250 per session.

    Therefore, a 4-hour intensive would range from $640-$1000 per session.

    5. I’m coming from out of town—is that okay?

    Yes! Many clients travel from outside Toronto for EMDR Intensives. New Moon Psychotherapy is conveniently located downtown, close to numerous hotels and easily accessible by public transit or car.

    We recommend arriving at least one day before your session to allow for travel delays and to ensure you’re fully prepared. Because of the intensive nature of these sessions, they cannot be rescheduled.

    We also encourage you to consider how you may feel after the intensive—emotional and physical processing can be significant—so plan whether same-day travel is safe and comfortable for you.

    6. Are EMDR Intensives offered in person?

    Yes! Most clients find in-person intensives in downtown Toronto ideal for deep, focused processing. However, virtual EMDR intensives may also be available for clients across Ontario, depending on your needs and your therapist’s assessment.

    When contacting our intake team, please indicate your preference for in-person or virtual therapy so we can connect you with a therapist who can accommodate your request.
