    MSW Year 1 Practicum

    What You’ll Gain: Learning Objectives & Key Responsibilities

    By the end of the practicum, students will:

     

    • Develop Client Engagement Skills – Learn to conduct intake calls with prospective clients, while focusing on building rapport, assessing client needs, and determining fit for service.
    • Gain Exposure to Therapeutic Practices – Observe therapy sessions and or participate in mock therapy sessions, take structured notes, and learn about various therapeutic modalities.
    • Understand Ethical and Professional Standards – Apply social work ethics, confidentiality guidelines, and best practices in a private practice setting.
    • Improve Documentation and Administrative Competencies – Assist with record keeping, scheduling, and client coordination, ensuring compliance with ethical and legal guidelines.
    • Engage in Research and Knowledge Mobilization – Translate clinical research into accessible client-facing content through blog posts, social media, and promotional materials.
    • Support Program Development and Evaluation – Assist in the creation, implementation, and assessment of clinical programs.
    • Participate in Professional Development – Attend trainings and practice-wide learning events focusing on therapeutic modalities and effective practice with various populations.
    • Engage in Supervision – Focus on your professional growth during weekly supervision sessions, reflective discussions, and case consultations to strengthen clinical skills and confidence.
    Supervision & Support

    Practicum students will receive:

     

    • Weekly individual or group supervision to discuss clinical observations, ethical considerations, and professional development.
    • Case consultation and reflective discussions to deepen understanding of therapeutic dynamics.
    • Support in skill-building, including intake assessments, documentation, and professional communication.
    • Opportunities for self-reflection, helping students develop their professional identity and therapeutic approach.

    New Moon Psychotherapy is a Toronto-based psychotherapy practice specializing in trauma, relationships, and sex therapy.

    Our Year 1 MSW practicum offers students a foundational experience in clinical social work within a private practice setting. This placement provides an opportunity to develop essential professional skills, observe therapy in action, and participate in practice operations, all within a supportive and growth-oriented environment.

    Under the supervision of experienced clinicians, students will gain hands-on exposure to ethical practice, client engagement, and the business aspects of private practice, preparing them for more advanced clinical roles in the future.

    Meet the Supervisor: Camila Espana

    Supervision will be provided by Camila Espana, MSW, RSW, who practices from a person-centred, relational approach. Camila is dedicated to supporting practicum students in strengthening their clinical observations, relational awareness, and professional confidence. She emphasizes skill-building in managing complex therapeutic spaces where multiple clients, goals, and perspectives intersect.
