Finding Healing After the Loss of a Loved One
Losing someone you love can leave you feeling as though a part of you is still stuck in your grief—no matter how much time has passed. You may find yourself carrying overwhelming sadness, guilt, regret, or unresolved emotions that haven’t eased with time. Perhaps you’ve talked about your loss, but it hasn’t made the pain feel any lighter.
At New Moon Psychotherapy in downtown Toronto, we offer Induced After-Death Communication (IADC) Therapy—a specialized grief therapy built upon the principles of EMDR. Through guided bilateral stimulation, IADC helps the brain process unresolved grief and traumatic loss, transforming the way grief is carried so that painful memories become less emotionally overwhelming.
Our team supports adults navigating grief, including losses related to suicide, accidental death, overdose, homicide, sudden medical events, pregnancy loss, and other traumatic or unexpected deaths, as well as survivor’s guilt and unresolved bereavement. Every person’s experience of loss is unique, and our approach is tailored to your individual needs.

What Is IADC Therapy?
IADC (Induced After-Death Communication) is a specialized therapeutic approach developed by psychologist Dr. Allan Botkin to help people process grief, traumatic loss, and unresolved emotions following the death of a loved one. It is a structured psychotherapy approach based on the principles and procedures of EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and uses bilateral stimulation to support emotional processing and healing.
Despite its name, IADC does not require or assume that someone will communicate with a deceased loved one, nor does it depend on any particular spiritual or religious belief. Rather, it is a structured therapeutic approach that helps people process painful memories and unresolved emotions associated with loss.
Like EMDR, IADC uses bilateral stimulation (BLS)—such as eye movements, gentle taps, or alternating sounds—to support the brain’s natural ability to process unresolved experiences. During treatment, clients may experience shifts in perspective, emotional resolution, a sense of connection, or other meaningful experiences that transform the way grief is carried. Some people describe an experience they interpret as communication with a deceased loved one, while others experience meaningful healing without describing any after-death communication.
The goal of IADC Therapy is not to diminish the significance of your loss, but to reduce the emotional intensity and distress associated with grief. By helping the nervous system process painful memories and unresolved emotions, IADC can support greater acceptance, emotional relief, and an increased ability to engage fully in life while maintaining a meaningful bond with the person who has died.

What to Expect in IADC Therapy
IADC Therapy is a structured, EMDR-based approach to grief and traumatic loss. Your therapist will guide you through each step at a pace that feels safe and supportive, ensuring you feel prepared before beginning the process.
Step 1:
Consultation & Assessment
We'll begin with a free 15-minute consultation, followed by a comprehensive assessment to understand your grief, answer your questions, and determine whether IADC is the right fit for you.
Step 2:
Preparation
Before beginning IADC, we'll review the process, answer our questions, strengthen coping strategies if needed, and ensure you feel emotionally prepared. Together, we'll help you make space for the processing sessions and the healing that may follow.
Step 3:
IADC Processing
Using bilateral stimulation (similar to EMDR), your therapist will guide you through the IADC protocol in a safe and supportive environment. You'll remain awake, aware, and in control throughout the session. Every experience is unique, and there is no expectation that a particular experience will occur.
Step 4:
Integration
Following processing, you'll have time to reflect on your experience, explore any insights that emerged, and discuss how they may support your ongoing healing.
IADC is typically offered as two 90-minute sessions, scheduled on consecutive days or within two days of one another. Some clients choose IADC as a stand-alone treatment, while others incorporate it into ongoing grief or trauma therapy.
Sessions are available in person in downtown Toronto and virtually across Ontario.
Is IADC Therapy Right for You?
IADC Therapy is a specialized, EMDR-based approach that isn’t the right fit for everyone. Before beginning treatment, your therapist will complete a comprehensive assessment to determine whether IADC is appropriate for your needs, goals, and stage of healing.
During your assessment we’ll consider:
- Whether this approach is the best fit for your grief and treatment goals
- Your emotional readiness for deeper processing
- Whether additional preparation or stabilization would be beneficial first
- Any medical, neurological, or mental health factors that may influence treatment
If IADC isn’t the most appropriate approach, we’ll recommend another evidence-based therapy that better supports your current needs.
