Couples Therapy in Downtown Toronto

New Moon Psychotherapy specializes in couples therapy that addresses the whole relationship including sex, intimacy, trauma, and the patterns that keep you stuck. In-person couples counselling in Toronto and online across Ontario.

Two beautiful young women share a tender moment at home, smiling and enjoying each other's company.
A happy couple embracing tenderly in their living room, sharing a moment of love and affection.

Love isn’t supposed to feel like this…

Couples can get stuck in a painful script: “We keep having the same fight. We can’t talk without it blowing up. Everything changed after the affair.”

You might feel like you’re on two different pages, alone even when you are together, or like one of you shuts down while the other gets louder.

Sex might have stopped entirely, or it hurts physically or emotionally. Erectile dysfunction, pain during sex, low desire, or intimacy that triggers panic instead of pleasure.

Trust can feel fragile, and stress or a new baby can start to run the relationship.

At New Moon Psychotherapy in Downtown Toronto, we help couples slow the cycle, hear what is really happening underneath it, and begin again with a deeper connection. Believe us: it is possible to feel like a team again.

Couples Therapy | Downtown Toronto

Why Couples Therapy?

Your relationship deserves more than just getting by. It deserves to thrive.

Relationships move through phases, just like the moon. Periods of closeness can give way to distance, stress, or rupture, especially when trauma, life transitions, or unspoken hurts enter the picture.

Relationship therapy exists because patterns don’t fix themselves. Over time, unresolved conflict, emotional disconnection, trauma triggers, or mismatched needs can take over how you relate, communicate, and repair. You may feel unheard, misunderstood, or alone in the relationship, even while sharing a life together.

Couples therapy helps you step out of stuck patterns and back into connection. Our work is grounded in compassion, clinical expertise, and a deep understanding of attachment, love, sex, trauma, and healing.

With the right support, you can fight smarter, rebuild trust after infidelity or betrayal, reignite closeness, deepen sexual intimacy, and create a relationship shaped by choice rather than reactivity.

How We Work With Couples

We treat the trauma beneath relationship patterns so you can heal deeply, together.

At New Moon Psychotherapy, we understand that relationships are shaped by attachment histories and lived experience.

Trauma doesn’t stay contained within one person; it shows up between people. That’s why our therapy for couples integrates trauma-focused work alongside evidence-based relationship treatment, and why sex therapy is woven into couples work when intimacy, desire, or sexual challenges are part of the picture.

In couples therapy, we use approaches such as:

EFT helps you understand the cycle beneath conflict and rebuild emotional safety, trust, and connection.

Tools to improve communication, repair after conflict, and strengthen friendship and commitment.

Clarifies roles and patterns, and reshapes the stories you carry so the relationship can move forward.

Parts-based therapy that helps protective parts soften so connection and safety can grow within the relationship.

EMDR helps partners process trauma and triggers so the past has less control over the present.

Clarifies roles and patterns, and reshapes the stories you carry so the relationship can move forward.

Questions About Couples Therapy

Yes. New Moon Psychotherapy is a sex-positive, kink-affirming, and LGBTQIA2S+ affirming practice. We welcome couples and partners practicing all forms of consensual non-monogamy, including open relationships, polyamory, relationship anarchy, and multi-partner relationship structures.

Ethical Non-Monogamy is never assumed to be the problem. If ENM is not what is bringing you to Toronto couples therapy or intimacy therapy for couples, we won’t make it one. Many clients practice non-monogamy in healthy, intentional, and deeply connected ways, and we honour that.

All partners involved in your relationship are welcome to participate in relationship therapy. When ENM is part of what you would like support with, such as communication challenges, boundaries, pacing differences, jealousy, trust issues, or repairing agreement breaches, we offer knowledgeable, non-judgemental guidance. You can expect a space where your relationship structure is respected and your goals lead the work.

Yes, you’re in the right place! New Moon Psychotherapy has a strong, specialized focus on trauma in relationships. We deeply understand how trauma shapes communication, attachment patterns, intimacy, and emotional regulation within relationships.

Many couples seek relationship therapy because past trauma, experienced by one partner or both, is impacting connection, trust, and safety. Trauma can show up through emotional reactions, conflict cycles, trauma triggers, boundaries, intimacy challenges, or difficulty feeling understood during moments of stress or disagreement.

In couples therapy for trauma, we help you:

  • Understand how trauma is influencing your relationship
  • Build emotional and nervous-system safety together
  • Navigate triggers and sensitive moments with more clarity
  • Strengthen communication, even during conflict
  • Rebuild trust, closeness, and intimacy at a pace that respects your histories
  • Develop tools that help both partners feel grounded, supported, and understood

You don’t need to hide your trauma history or know exactly where to start. Our couples therapists are equipped to hold this work with care, clarity, and respect, helping trauma become something you navigate together rather than something that keeps you apart.

Not necessarily, but sometimes it can be helpful. Couples therapy with a couples counsellor Toronto focuses on the “us,” how you relate, communicate, and navigate conflict and connection together. When trauma, anxiety, depression, PTSD symptoms, or substance use are part of the picture, each partner may also be carrying experiences that are difficult to process fully in a shared space.

In these situations, individual therapy can offer additional support, such as:

  • Processing trauma or past experiences affecting the relationship
  • Learning regulation skills when emotions feel overwhelming
  • Reducing shutdowns, reactivity, or escalation cycles
  • Getting support for anxiety, depression, or PTSD symptoms
  • Supporting recovery or reducing substance use

That said, not everyone needs individual therapy. Some couples do very well focusing solely on relationship therapy, while others benefit from a combined approach. You don’t have to decide this upfront. We will explore together what feels most supportive for both of you and for the relationship.

No. Our role in couples therapy isn’t to take sides or assign blame. We remain neutral, grounded, and focused on what supports the relationship as a whole, rather than deciding who is right or wrong.

We view relationship challenges as patterns and dynamics, not personal flaws. It is rarely just one person causing the problem. Instead, couples get pulled into cycles of conflict, shutdown, or disconnection. Our job is to help you understand that cycle and work together to change it.

Being neutral doesn’t mean being passive. When something needs to be named, clarified, or gently challenged, we will do so in a way that supports safety, accountability, and repair.

You can expect us to:

  • Hold space for both partners
  • Help each person feel heard and understood
  • Interrupt unhelpful patterns
  • Focus on the dynamic rather than blame
  • Support healthier, more connected ways of relating

Couples therapy for couples works best when both/all partners feel safe, respected, and supported. That is the space we are committed to creating.

Yes. This is a very common concern, and it makes sense. Many people struggle with communication, especially when trauma, anxiety, or past relationship experiences have shaped how they cope with emotions.

Couples therapy can still be effective even if one partner feels shut down or less expressive. It’s not your job to carry the emotional work for both of you. It is our role as couples therapists to help each partner communicate in ways that feel safer and more manageable.

We’ll help your partner:

  • Slow down and express what’s happening internally
  • Find language for emotions that feel unfamiliar
  • Understand their shutdown, defensiveness, or avoidance
  • Communicate without becoming overwhelmed
  • Build confidence in saying what they need

And we support you in:

  • Not feel like you’re doing all the work
  • Understand what’s underneath your partner’s silence
  • Feel heard, validated, and supported

Sometimes the quieter partner is participating, just in a different way. With structure, guidance, and safety, they often become more open, engaged, and expressive over time.

There’s no one-size-fits-all timeline, but many couples begin to notice meaningful shifts within the first couple of months, especially as they start applying new skills and understanding each other differently.

The pace depends on what brought you in, the level of distress or disconnection, and how much space you’re able to make for the work between sessions.

Couples therapy isn’t just about resolving conflict; it’s about strengthening connection, deepening understanding, and building new ways of relating that feel more supportive and sustainable. Even small improvements in communication or emotional safety can create a sense of progress and relief.

Our goal is to help you see change as it happens, celebrate improvements, and keep shaping a relationship that supports both of you not just during therapy, but long after it ends.

Have other questions? We’d love to hear from you.
